(REEF SAFE / INTERMEDIATE)

Essential Information:

  • Common Names: Two Spot Bristletooth Tang, Two Spot Surgeonfish, Binotatus Tang
  • Scientific Name: Ctenochaetus binotatus
  • Family: Acanthuridae
  • Origin/Habitat: Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found in coral reefs, lagoons, and seagrass beds.
  • Maximum Size: Up to 7 inches (18 cm)
  • Lifespan: Typically 5–10 years with proper care
  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate; requires a well-established tank with ample space and grazing opportunities.

Appearance & Physical Traits:

  • Coloration & Pattern: The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang has a yellow-brown body with two distinctive black spots on either side, just in front of the tail. It also features a light blue tint around its tail area.
  • Body Shape & Structure: Oval, laterally compressed body with a small mouth, ideal for grazing on algae. It also has sharp spines on both sides of its tail for self-defense.

Habitat & Environmental Needs:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (284 liters) or larger.
  • Water Temperature: Maintain between 74°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
  • pH Level: Keep between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Specific Gravity: Optimal range is 1.023 to 1.025.
  • Aquascape: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. A tank with ample swimming space is essential.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Diet Type: Herbivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Primarily feeds on algae, including hair algae, and will graze on live rock. It may also accept nori, seaweed, and algae-based pellets.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 1–2 times daily; provide algae or nori regularly to satisfy grazing needs.

Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, though it may show some territorial behavior towards other tangs or similar species.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept singly or in a group with other peaceful herbivores, especially in larger tanks.
  • Tank Mate Compatibility: Compatible with most peaceful fish, especially other herbivores. Avoid aggressive or similarly shaped tangs, as this can lead to territorial disputes.
  • Activity Level: Active grazer, often seen swimming around rocks and actively searching for algae.

Care Considerations & Additional Notes:

  • Ease of Care: The Two Spot Bristletooth Tang is a hardy species, but it requires a well-established tank with ample live rock and algae to graze on.
  • Special Requirements: Regular grazing is essential to maintain its health and prevent it from becoming stressed or underfed. Providing a mix of nori and other algae-based foods will keep it happy.
  • Breeding Info: Rarely bred in captivity; little is known about its reproductive behavior.
  • Additional Notes: This tang is an excellent addition to a reef tank due to its peaceful temperament and ability to help control algae growth. It is best suited for aquarists who have experience with herbivorous fish and larger tank systems.
