The Resplendent Anthias (Pseudanthias pulcherrimus) is a strikingly beautiful and vibrant marine species, known for its brilliant colors and active swimming behavior. Its bold pink and orange hues make it a show-stopping addition to any reef tank, and its peaceful nature makes it a favorite among aquarists.
(REEF SAFE / INTERMEDIATE)
Essential Information:
- Common Names: Resplendent Anthias, Beautiful Anthias
- Scientific Name: Pseudanthias pulcherrimus
- Family: Serranidae
- Origin/Habitat: Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found in coral reefs, seaward reefs, and drop-offs in areas like the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
- Maximum Size: Up to 3.5 inches (9 cm)
- Lifespan: Typically 5–7 years with proper care
- Level of Difficulty: Intermediate; requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank. These fish thrive in large tanks with high water quality and plenty of swimming space.
Appearance & Physical Traits:
- Coloration & Pattern: The Resplendent Anthias is known for its bright pink to purple body with orange and yellow accents. The males often exhibit more vibrant coloring than the females, with more pronounced purple and orange tones.
- Body Shape & Structure: It has a slender, streamlined body that helps it move swiftly through the water. Its elongated fins and sharp tail are well-suited for its active swimming behavior.
Habitat & Environmental Needs:
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (284 liters) or larger.
- Water Temperature: Maintain between 74°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
- pH Level: Keep between 8.1 and 8.4.
- Specific Gravity: Optimal range is 1.023 to 1.025.
- Aquascape: Provide a well-established tank with plenty of rock work for hiding, as well as open swimming areas. A healthy reef environment with live rock and coral is ideal for this species.
Diet & Feeding:
- Diet Type: Carnivorous
- Preferred Foods: The Resplendent Anthias prefers meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped fish. It will also accept high-quality pellets and frozen foods.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily; due to their small stomachs and active metabolism, frequent feedings with a varied diet are essential to maintain their health.
Behavior & Compatibility:
- Temperament: Peaceful and social, the Resplendent Anthias is an active swimmer and tends to school in the wild. In captivity, it is best kept in groups of at least 3–4 individuals to allow natural social interactions.
- Social Behavior: These fish are best kept in groups or harems, with one male and several females. The males can become territorial, so a large tank is needed to provide enough space for the group dynamics to play out naturally.
- Tank Mate Compatibility: Compatible with other peaceful reef fish. It may become stressed or aggressive if kept with overly aggressive species or other dominant males. Avoid larger predators or overly aggressive tank mates.
- Activity Level: Very active, often seen darting around the tank and exploring all areas. It is an inquisitive species that enjoys swimming freely through the water column.
Care Considerations & Additional Notes:
- Ease of Care: While generally hardy, the Resplendent Anthias requires stable water quality and a carefully balanced diet. It is best suited for intermediate-level aquarists due to its specific care requirements.
- Special Requirements: A large, well-established tank with excellent water quality is crucial for this species. It may require additional filtration and a larger volume of water due to its active nature and the need for consistent feeding.
- Breeding Info: Little is known about breeding the Resplendent Anthias in captivity, but they exhibit distinct sexual dimorphism, with males having more vivid colors and larger fins.
- Additional Notes: The Resplendent Anthias is one of the most beautiful and colorful fish for a reef tank. Their social structure in the wild can be mimicked in larger aquariums, but they should be provided with enough space to avoid territorial disputes and stress.
