(REEF SAFE WITH CAUTION / INTERMEDIATE)

Essential Information:

  • Common Names: Magnificent Foxface, Andaman Foxface, Magnificent Rabbitfish
  • Scientific Name: Siganus magnificus
  • Family: Siganidae
  • Origin/Habitat: Native to the Indo-Pacific, found in lagoons and coral-rich reef environments.
  • Maximum Size: Up to 9 inches (23 cm)
  • Lifespan: Typically 5–10 years with proper care
  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate; requires a well-established tank with ample swimming space and algae for grazing.

Appearance & Physical Traits:

  • Coloration & Pattern: White body with a black mask over the eyes, a deep yellow dorsal area, and black markings on the fins.
  • Body Shape & Structure: Laterally compressed body with elongated dorsal and anal fins; venomous dorsal spines used for defense.

Habitat & Environmental Needs:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons (475 liters) or larger.
  • Water Temperature: Maintain between 74°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
  • pH Level: Keep between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Specific Gravity: Optimal range is 1.023 to 1.025.
  • Aquascape: Provide open swimming areas with live rock for grazing and occasional hiding spots.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Diet Type: Herbivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Marine algae, seaweed (nori), spirulina, and high-quality herbivore pellets. May also accept mysis shrimp and other frozen foods.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily to ensure adequate nutrition.

Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but may become territorial with similar species.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept singly unless in a large tank; can coexist with most peaceful community fish.
  • Tank Mate Compatibility: Compatible with most reef fish but should not be housed with aggressive tank mates.
  • Activity Level: Active swimmer, frequently grazing on algae throughout the tank.

Care Considerations & Additional Notes:

  • Ease of Care: Relatively easy to maintain but requires a steady food supply to prevent malnutrition.
  • Special Requirements: Venomous dorsal spines can cause painful stings; handle with caution when maintaining the tank.
  • Breeding Info: Rarely bred in captivity; little is known about its reproductive behavior.
  • Additional Notes: The Magnificent Foxface Rabbitfish is reef-safe with caution, as some individuals may nip at soft corals and fleshy polyps if underfed. Ensuring a sufficient herbivorous diet can help minimize this behavior.
