  • Common Names: Blue Filamented Flasher Wrasse, Filamented Wrasse, Cyaneus Flasher Wrasse
  • Scientific Name: Paracheilinus cyaneus
  • Family: Labridae
  • Origin/Habitat: Native to the Indo-Pacific, found in coral reefs and outer reef slopes.
  • Maximum Size: Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Lifespan: Typically 5–7 years with proper care
  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate; requires a well-established tank with stable water conditions.

Appearance & Physical Traits:

  • Coloration & Pattern: Males display electric blue, orange, and red hues with extended filament-like dorsal fins, especially during courtship. Females are more subdued in color.
  • Body Shape & Structure: Slender and elongated body designed for quick, darting movements.

Habitat & Environmental Needs:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons (150 liters) or larger.
  • Water Temperature: Maintain between 74°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
  • pH Level: Keep between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Specific Gravity: Optimal range is 1.023 to 1.025.
  • Aquascape: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding spots and open swimming space. A secure lid is essential, as they are known jumpers.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Diet Type: Carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Frozen or live mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts.

Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social but may become territorial with other wrasses.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept in small harems (one male with multiple females) to encourage flashing displays.
  • Tank Mate Compatibility: Compatible with most peaceful reef fish; avoid overly aggressive species.
  • Activity Level: Highly active and constantly swimming, especially in the mid-to-upper water column.

Care Considerations & Additional Notes:

  • Ease of Care: Requires a mature aquarium with stable conditions and a varied diet.
  • Special Requirements: A tight-fitting lid is necessary to prevent jumping.
  • Breeding Info: Difficult to breed in captivity; males perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females.
  • Additional Notes: The Blue Filamented Flasher Wrasse is reef-safe and does not pose a threat to corals or invertebrates. Keeping a male with females will encourage the most vibrant coloration and flashing behavior.
