The Clown Wrasse Juvenile (African) (Coris aygula) is a beautiful and vibrant species known for its striking orange, white, and black coloration. This species undergoes significant changes as it matures, with juveniles exhibiting a bright orange body and bold white and black bands, resembling a clownfish. As it grows, its coloration changes, and it develops into a more subtle green and black adult form.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this juvenile wrasse is an active and inquisitive swimmer. It requires a large aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. This species is semi-aggressive and can become territorial as it matures, so it’s best housed with other robust fish in a larger tank.
As a carnivore, the Clown Wrasse feeds on meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and other marine proteins. It may also hunt small invertebrates, so caution is advised when housing it in a reef environment, as it can pose a risk to smaller invertebrates and corals.
This species is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its size and care requirements. With its vivid juvenile colors and lively behavior, the Clown Wrasse Juvenile makes a fascinating addition to large marine aquariums.
