The Flameback Angelfish (Centropyge acanthops), also known as the African Pygmy Angelfish or Orangeback Angelfish, is a vibrant marine species cherished for its striking blue and orange-yellow coloration. Originating from the western Indian Ocean, particularly around the coast of Africa, this dwarf angelfish is a popular choice among aquarists due to its manageable size and captivating appearance.

(REEF SAFE WITH CAUTION / INTERMEDIATE)

Essential Information:

  • Common Names: Flameback Angelfish, African Pygmy Angelfish, Orangeback Angelfish
  • Scientific Name: Centropyge acanthops
  • Family: Pomacanthidae
  • Origin/Habitat: Western Indian Ocean, notably along the African coastline; typically inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas.
  • Maximum Size: Approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, can live up to 5 years or more in captivity.
  • Level of Difficulty: Moderate; suitable for aquarists with some experience due to specific care requirements.

Appearance & Physical Traits:

  • Coloration & Pattern: Features a deep blue body contrasted by a bright orange to yellow swath extending from the head along the back to the tip of the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is yellow and somewhat transparent.
  • Body Shape & Structure: Compact, oval-shaped body typical of dwarf angelfish, with smooth, continuous dorsal and anal fins.

Habitat & Environmental Needs:

  • Minimum Tank Size: A well-established aquarium of at least 55 gallons (208 liters) is recommended to provide ample space and stable water conditions.
  • Water Temperature: Maintain between 72°F and 78°F (22°C to 26°C).
  • pH Level: Keep between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Specific Gravity: Optimal range is 1.020 to 1.025.
  • Aquascape: Provide plenty of live rock formations to offer hiding spots and grazing surfaces; a well-structured environment helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviors.

Diet & Feeding:

  • Diet Type: Omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Feeds on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer a varied diet including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis or frozen shrimp, and other meaty foods.
  • Feeding Frequency: Provide small feedings 2 to 3 times daily to meet nutritional needs and support overall health.

Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards other dwarf angelfish.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept singly due to potential aggression towards conspecifics; can coexist with other non-aggressive species in a community tank.
  • Tank Mate Compatibility: Compatible with a variety of peaceful marine fish; exercise caution when housing with other angelfish or similarly shaped species.
  • Activity Level: Active and inquisitive; spends significant time exploring the tank and grazing on available surfaces.

Care Considerations & Additional Notes:

  • Ease of Care: Requires regular monitoring of water quality and a stable environment; suitable for aquarists with some experience.
  • Special Requirements: May nip at small-polyped stony corals and clam mantles; considered reef safe with caution. Providing ample natural food sources and regular feedings can help mitigate this behavior.
  • Breeding Info: Breeding in captivity is rare and not well-documented; sexual dimorphism is not prominent, making pair selection challenging.
  • Additional Notes: A well-maintained aquarium with stable parameters and a diverse diet is essential for the health and longevity of the Flameback Angelfish. Regular observation is key to ensuring compatibility with tank mates and preventing potential issues.
